Embracing the Most Rigorous Scrum Test with Fortitude
As a devoted Scrum practitioner for over a decade, I have guided numerous enterprises on effectively implementing Scrum and have proudly served as an Agile coach for various CEOs of major corporations. Though the path I have taken is unique within Taiwan, I eagerly pursued the challenge of obtaining the most demanding Scrum expert certification – the PSM3. Currently, a mere 1,000 PSM3-certified individuals exist worldwide, with only 3 hailing from Taiwan, two of whom are PSTs.
From Failure to Triumph: A Journey of Courage and Growth to Achieve PSM3
Initial Setback
During my first attempt at the PSM3 exam, I was “not” successful. Receiving the failing score filled me with embarrassment, akin to a language teacher failing a composition test. Despite the disappointment, I resolved to rise and try again. In this endeavor, I am deeply grateful for the genuine encouragement I received from Mr. Dave West. His unwavering encouragement was invaluable to me.
Inspect and Adapt
Embodying the Scrum value of “COURAGE,” I confronted my weaknesses head-on and, with the spirit of Empiricism’s “INSPECT and ADAPT,” determined the core issue: “During the exam, I solved numerous Scrum problems but failed to adequately connect them to Scrum principles and values.” In shortest time, I re-enrolled and, at last, achieved a passing score.
The Driving Force behind My Resurgence
As an educator with an unwavering commitment to promoting Scrum’s mission, my goal is to successfully adopt Scrum to 100 non-IT enterprises in Taiwan. To date, I have successfully implemented Agile in six companies and assisted 30 school principals in fully understanding and incorporating Scrum within their institutions. If I, with such a mission, were to falter and fail to pass the most rigorous Scrum test, how could I confidently face my audience? Furthermore, who is to say that an expert is immune to failure?
Practice and Growth
In my pursuit of PSM3 certification, I drew upon my own practical experiences, diligently studied the 2020 Scrum Guide, sought counsel from international Scrum experts, and meticulously analyzed real-world case studies. These efforts have equipped me with the skills to navigate complex team and organizational situations with ease. By successfully applying Scrum knowledge to various cases, such as securing management support for Scrum at RICOH and achieving record-high global participation of 888 Scrum practitioners in the 2022 RSG Taipei event I promoted, I have come to understand that Scrum is not merely theoretical but rather a set of principles that can be practically applied to real work and generate value for clients.
Striving for Improvement
To triumph in my second attempt at the PSM3 exam, I undertook the following measures to elevate my proficiency:
1.Compiled an extensive collection of successful Scrum cases to deepen my understanding of Scrum’s real-world applications.
2.Read recommended books, including Scrum Mastery by Geoff Watts, Pocket Scrum by Gunther Verheyen, PSM (Professional Scrum Master), Coaching Agile Teams by Lyssa Adkins, Agile Retrospective by Derby and Larsen, among others, to gain a comprehensive understanding of Scrum’s knowledge framework.
3.Engaged in discussions with numerous Scrum experts, such as Bill Li CST , Adrian Cheng PST, and Chungan Ke AKT, soliciting their advice on practical Scrum techniques and experiences.
Ascending to Greater Heights in Scrum
Now a certified PSM3, I view this accomplishment as a stepping stone toward achieving higher levels of Scrum mastery. I pledge to persevere, continuously refine my skills, and provide expert guidance and support to Scrum teams and organizations worldwide.
